PODIATRY

Podiatry is the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases of the human foot. Also called chiropody.

What is a Podiatrist ?

A podiatrist is a health professional who deals with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of medical and surgical conditions of the feet and lower limbs.

The conditions podiatrists treat include:
  • Skin and nail disorders, such as corns, calluses, verrucae, “sweaty” or “dry” feet, athletes foot, ingrown/fungal/thickened toenails.

  • The ageing foot

  • Neurological, rheumatology and circulatory diseases affecting the feet.

  • Diabetic foot care, ranging from foot care advice, diabetic foot assessments, wound care maintenance and prevention.

  • Arthritic foot care

  • Foot injuries

  • Gout

  • Bunions and other toe deformities

  • Biomechanics, ranging from heel pain (plantar fasciitis/heel spurs), “flat feet”, “highly arched” feet, limb length differences, knee/back pain, neuroma pain……………

  • Podopaediatrics, specialising in the foot care of children

 

To become a podiatrist a practitioner must complete a Bachelor of Science Degree in Podiatry in a recognised university and be registered with the appropriate podiatry registration boards.
